Afzal Khan holding petition signed by Manchester Gorton Councillors
Afzal Khan holding petition signed by Manchester Gorton Councillors

We know the difficulty pavement parking causes particularly for pedestrians, those with disabilities, prams and young children, and people who are neurodivergent. Earlier this year in Parliament, I  called on the Government to give councils across England the power and resources to stop pavement parking. Right now, only London councils have the power to issue penalty notices.

Your Manchester Gorton Labour councillors and I don’t think this is right.

Surely what is good enough for London is good enough for Manchester.

That’s why in the next few weeks, I’ll be presenting a formal petition in the House of Commons on behalf of all thirty councillors representing wards in the Manchester Gorton constituency asking for a default ban on pavement parking across England. Manchester and other cities need the powers to tackle this issue, but despite a promise for a review three years ago, the Tory Government has done nothing.

Pavements are for people, not for cars. It’s time for a default ban on pavement parking to make streets usable for people walking or wheeling, and create an environment that is for the many, not the few. That will mean more people on foot, bikes, and public transport. We can then see fewer cars, and healthier, cleaner air for our entire community.

Do you agree? Join us and sign the petition.

To the House of Commons.

The petition of councillors representing wards in the Manchester Gorton constituency,

Declares that parking on the pavement has a significant negative impact on people who are mobility impaired, blind or partially sighted, are neurodivergent, and parents and children.

The petitioners therefore request that the House of Commons urge the Government to respond to the consultation ‘pavement parking: options for change’ and begin the process of instituting a default ban on pavement parking across England.

And the petitioners remain, etc
